BACKGROUND
The city of Indore commissioned a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) under the supervision of the Atal Indore City Transport Services Ltd (AICTL). The iBus, as it was christened, would ferry passengers along the BRTS Corridor and the feeder route, with city buses serving other specified routes in the city. The AICTL plies buses on a PPP model with several bus operators. 200 BRTS buses cater to Indore, within city limits, and connect more than 35 different routes.

When the AICTL commenced city bus operations, they implemented a GPS-based AVL and PIS system for bus tracking as well as monitoring. As the transport offering expanded, the older system, which was almost manual in nature, was found to be incapable of handling operational challenges and incidents. The AICTL were looking at procuring a well-designed Intelligent Transport System to install for their buses.

The Amnex Edge : As part of a World Bank funded initiative competitive bids were invited from national and international players to setup an Intelligent Transit Management Solution for AICTSL. Amnex was awarded the project after a rigorous round of evaluation and negotiations.

The Solution
With the advent of ITS, all critical incidents such as fire, medical emergency, theft, bus breakdown get instantly reported and resolved. Exception reports are sent to bus operators via an auto mailer.

An Automatic Fare Collection System (AFCS) was implemented to automate revenue collection. The service integrated various components such as access gates at stations, QR code-based ticketing, RFID tokens and personalized Smart Cards.

The web solution enabled managers to monitor the entire fleet efficiently. Buses were tracked on a real-time basis to enable communication of arrival timings at the stops through state-of-the-art GPS and GPRS. The solution yielded standard MIS report, along with exception reporting and BI analytical tools (with map, chart and text displays) to all levels of management for scientific decision-making. The solution went to the next step by aiding policy-makers owing to the availability of a data analytics platform.

For passengers the solution made travel within the city seamless and more efficient, also providing them with instant access to schedule information and the bus timetable with real-time ETA and ETD.

THE IMPACT
The AICTL managed to create a sense of ownership among commuters for their transport network. Women, senior citizens and students were the sections to experience the utmost benefit. The solution significantly reduced the number of cars on the road as more people switched to public transport. Less paper tickets were printed in lieu of more smart cards and pass sale doubled. The Swacch Bharat survey team focused on the BRT corridor and stations and appreciated the level of cleanliness. The solution spurred the development of future organized, safe, reliable, economic and pollution-friendly public transport systems to further the smart city initiative under the Government of India
