Six resolutions that can help push your professional growth forward:

Small things make a big difference. New year resolutions are nothing but a way to bid adieu to old habits that hinder our growth and form new ones that promote it. From losing weight to healthy eating and saving more money, everyone makes one or the other kind of resolution at the beginning of a new year with the hope of forming them into solid habits. However, only a few ponder over improving their work habits as a part of their new year’s resolution.

So, we have listed down a few work habits that we all can inculcate in our daily routines to push our professional growth forward.

Break out of comfort zones:

Mind automates processes to deal with vast amounts of stimuli we receive from the world around us. While automation is incredibly important for saving mental energy, it also pushes us into our comfort zone. For example, doing the same task repeatedly and monotonously trains our minds to work on predefined parameters. Hence, we become stagnant with the work we do. This year, try doing things differently. It challenges our brains to break boundaries and wander in unchartered territories. Who knows, this small practice may lead some to eureka moments.

Learn a new skill:

Being complacent with what we already know may hinder our growth prospects. Therefore, each of us should look forward to picking up new talent in the new year. A different coding language, mandala art, singing or playing the guitar, it can be anything. Learning a new skill will help you rearrange brain processes. Therefore, this new year, make it a point to develop and maintain an attitude of learning.

Practice mindfulness:

Being mindful means being present- in the place and time, you are in. We can derive great mental clarity just by practising mindfulness. It also helps strengthen our resilience and positive attitude. If you think meditation is difficult or almost impossible for you, just start by sitting quietly and watching your thoughts and feeling for five minutes without judging them.

Improve communication skills:

Though most common, effective communication is one of the crucial abilities one can have. Without this skill, all other skills might become redundant. Good communication skills can elevate you to a higher growth trajectory, be it a relationship, studies or any other area of life. Observe if your communication skills need improvement and work on them if required. Working on this soft skill will take you a long way.

Networking:

Are you good at breaking the ice? How often do you initiate a talk with a colleague from a different team, or are you cocooned comfortably in your group? Take the new year’s resolution as an opportunity to expand your network. Establishing connections with as many people as possible always helps. It also opens doorways for new ideas and perspectives.

Show gratitude more often:

Who doesn’t like to be acknowledged? We have a great platform, VIBE, to acknowledge our fellow team members, colleagues and even seniors if they have encouraged us or have gone the extra mile to help us. Showing gratitude keeps the cycle of positivity going, and we should do it more often.
