Life at Amnex: Why Having Fun at Workplace is Important

Life at Amnex

All great ideas emerge from a creative mind, and a creative mind cannot function well in a monotonous environment. Breaking monotony, thus, is important for success. At Amnex, we try to keep the work culture vivacious by frequently organizing activities like TT/Carrom tournaments, scavenger hunts, Antakshari to count a few. With a dedicated corner for indoor games such as table tennis, carrom and foosball, the fun has become an integral part of Amnex’s work culture. Not only this, we look forward to celebrating festivals like Christmas, Thanksgiving, Diwali, Navratri, Ganesh Chaturthi with great excitement. All these help us break the monotony and keep the work environment alive.

A number of studies suggest that life trapped in routines and sameness can create mental fatigue leading to boredom and stress. Getting up at the same time, working for the same hours, eating the same food, following a strict sleep regimen will turn us eventually into robots. Following a monotonous routine can negatively impact our cognitive functioning. Human intelligence is much more capable than doing robotic work. Therefore, even small changes like combing hair differently or taking a different route to the workplace can greatly impact your mood and boost your spirit. We believe that having fun activities at work can make life more exciting and interesting while enhancing performance and quality of work.

We spend a large part of our day at the workplace. If those hours are monotonous, they can impact our well-being. Therefore, taking mental breaks and having fun at work is important. We believe that fun does not necessarily mean something happening outside of the office. It can very much be a part of work culture. Apart from breaking the monotony, fun activities and celebrations are a great way of bonding with colleagues. In general, most employees are confined to their respective teams and departments. Fun activities bring all of them together, offering an opportunity to interact with each other. Sometimes these conversations mark a beginning of a great friendship.

It so happens that despite sitting next to each other for 8 to 9 hours daily, there is little we know about our colleagues other than the role they play in the office. Some of them may be great singers, some are good footballers, some are master strategists. But how would you know until you see them perform? Fun activities are a good platform to showcase the hidden talent. They provide an opportunity to bond over something other than work. They help build trust and develop a mutual understanding of each other’s strengths, weaknesses, traits and limitations. Working as an icebreaker, it significantly reduces feelings of isolation.

British advertising tycoon David Ogilvy said, “where people aren’t having fun, they seldom produce good work.” The higher purpose of the work we are doing at Amnex is to create a more intelligent world. It cannot be done by the minds caught in monotony. Therefore, we are trying to create a workplace where work is fun and fun is work.
