You Shouldn’t Be Thinking Outside the Box, Here is Why

Howard Schultz, the past Chairman and CEO of Starbucks once said, “Innovation must be disruptive. And by disruptive, I mean disruptive. You gotta fracture and break the rules and disrupt.”

In today’s era of cutthroat competition, innovation is the only differentiator. It takes one innovative product, one fresh market strategy, one new method to boost the organization’s growth to new heights. At Amnex, we try to foster a work environment that encourages innovation that has the power to disrupt.

A creative mind is a prerequisite for innovation. It cannot happen within a mind bound by the rules. Therefore, it is imperative to come out of the fear of failure and rejection and think up ideas that are ground-breaking and disruptive.

Think outside the box is a cliche phrase in the corporate world. J.P Guilford, a leading academic researcher and a renowned psychologist said that thinking outside the box is a wrong approach to innovation. He conducted a study on creativity and concluded that people generally apply boundary conditions to their thinking. The boundaries might look real, but most times they do not exist. For example, he gave people a nine-dot puzzle. The participants assumed that the dots on the paper formed a box. Actually, it could have been anything, but they assumed it to be a box. The key to creativity is not “thinking out of the box”, it is knowing that there is no box in the first place.

Talking to a child, studying about a new industry, reading a book from a different genre, turning things upside down are just some ways of invoking new ideas. When these creative ideas are executed with strategic planning and business logic, they can turn the tides.

The pandemic has brought many unconventional ideas to the mainstream. Studying online, working from home, telemedicine has become the new normal. People at large have become more open to change. Technology has played the role of a game-changer. The tech-driven world is rapidly evolving, and it is our time to unleash the power of imagination and grab the opportunity to disrupt through our technology solutions.
